Flatlets for older people: criteria for design?

A third lot of pics of specialised accommodation for older people in Bournemouth. This time two flatlet schemes on opposite sides of the road. Modern, neat...boring? Does converting an older building produce a more interesting place to live or is a convenient modern interior the main thing and the outside doesn't matter?

  1. Fascinating set of images!

I am at that stage, where we are talking of downsizing and moving into more appropriate housing for us. We have been talking for about 18 months and now have a plan. The first issue was sorting out where we want to live - somewhere with a view (in our case hills), somewhere convenient to public transport for when we no longer drive, and somewhere where one or other of the major supermarkets deliver. The second issue was what kind of accommodation - what space do we actually need to pursue our interests? We have explored possibility of a retirement village, but are put off by very large service charge (around £4k per annum!), so are looking for a good sized bungalow with a manageable garden (we are not gardeners) in our desired part of the country. We are not too bothered what the outside looks like, as long as it is easy maintenance, but very fussy about the inside.
But we are at that point where we have choices and, assuming we can sell our house, enough money to do what we want. A big question for me is how much choice do people actually have when it comes to the kind of accommodation you have been picturing?
